How to Choose a Domain Name for Your Small Business

5 min read

Choose a domain that is short, easy to say and spell, and tied to your business name. Favor a dot com when you can, avoid hyphens and odd spellings, and do not obsess over squeezing in keywords. Easy to remember beats clever every time.

Picking a domain name feels bigger than it is. People agonize over it for weeks. The truth is that a good domain just needs to be clear, easy to share out loud, and yours for the long run. Here is how to land on one without the stress.

Keep it short and simple

Shorter is easier to remember, easier to type, and easier to say over the phone. If you can get your business name on its own, that is usually the best choice. The fewer characters someone has to get right, the fewer people you lose to a typo.

Make it easy to say and spell

  • Skip hyphens, which get lost when you say the name out loud.
  • Avoid creative spellings that people will type the normal way.
  • Say it to a friend and see if they can spell it back without help.
  • Watch for awkward letter combinations that read the wrong way when run together.

Favor a dot com when you can

Dot com is still what people assume and type by default. If the dot com for your name is available, grab it. Newer endings can work, but many customers will type dot com out of habit and land somewhere else. If you go with an alternative, at least know that trade-off.

Do not force in keywords

You do not need your service and city crammed into the domain to rank. A name-based domain is fine, and often stronger for a brand you plan to grow. Chasing a stuffed keyword domain usually gives you something clunky that is hard to say and easy to forget.

The real test is the radio test. If you said your domain out loud once, could someone type it correctly from memory. If yes, you have a good one.

Lock it down

Once you pick one, register it and set it to renew automatically so you never lose it by accident. Keep the login somewhere safe. Your domain is one of the few pieces of your online presence that is genuinely yours, so treat it that way.
